You're finding it hard to engage clients who seem "unmotivated" or "resistant."
You feel stuck in sessions or often hear "I don't know" when asking questions.
Sessions leave you feeling drained, unsure whether you've made an impact, or like you're working harder than your client.
You find yourself revisiting the same problems without seeing the progress you'd hoped for.
Burnout is creeping in, making it harder to feel energized about your work.
If this resonates, you're not alone. There are ways to approach these conversations differently.
Solution-Focused Coaching offers a practical framework to help you move beyond problem-focused conversations and create more opportunities for clients to recognize their strengths, identify possibilities, and take steps toward what matters to them.

As an Occupational Therapist, you're already grounded in a client-centred and strengths-based approach. Solution-Focused Coaching builds on this foundation by helping you focus on your client's preferred future, existing resources, and what they want to be different.
It invites you to shift from asking, "What's the matter?" to exploring, "What matters to you, and what would you like to be different?"
Rather than relying exclusively on problem analysis, traditional goal-setting, or external assignments, you learn to use purposeful conversations to help clients identify what they want, recognize what's already working, and discover their own next steps.
The conversation itself becomes an important part of the intervention.
Through a collaborative and respectful approach, you can help clients recognize their abilities, explore possibilities, and build on even small signs of progress.
You don't need to abandon your existing OT frameworks or interventions. You'll learn how to incorporate Solution-Focused questions and strategies into the work you're already doing.
What is Solution Focused Coaching?
Solution Focused Coaching is also known as Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT).
SFBT is an evidence-based approach that is effective at helping clients from any background and with various presenting problems.
Client-centred: This language-based approach encourages clinicians to view each client as resourceful and competent, co-constructing with them to move forward into the life they would like to live.
Change-Oriented: SFBT professionals ask detail-oriented questions that help clients think in new and more adaptive ways. After engaging in these conversations, many clients report feeling warmly understood and empowered to take action and make changes in line with their desired outcomes.
Respectful and Collaborative: This approach doesn't re-traumatize clients or require them to wade through heartache and pain. Instead, SFBT helps clients expand their vision of who they are and what they are capable of accomplishing.
Looking Forward: SFBT encourages clients to focus their attention on the future they want to design and create, rather than continuing to focus on past problem-related concerns.

Client feedback after Solution Focused sessions:
Clients have commonly shared that they:
Felt a renewed sense of hope for the future.
Left sessions feeling better and more energized.
Gained clarity by sorting through overwhelming thoughts and arriving at their own conclusions and solutions.
Found it easier to open up and express themselves.
Felt genuinely heard and understood.
Realized they were coping better and making more progress than they initially thought.
Were surprised by insightful questions they hadn't previously considered, which offered new perspectives.
Could focus on who they want to become and the direction they want to take in life.
Felt empowered to move forward with greater confidence, particularly when returning to work or other meaningful roles.
Imagine bringing more of these conversations into your own practice.
Then this program is for you.

Insights from Program Attendees, Guest Lectures, and Workshops

Erica's follow-up and feedback are EPIC. Her thoroughness, organization, and enthusiasm are so inspiring.
SFC for OT Program Participant

I feel more confident in my OT practice as I have SFOT as a new tool to use with clients especially during the initial sessions or with more challenging clients. I have had a solid improvement in terms of using the SFOT language and questions during role play scenarios.
SFC for OT Program Participant

How authentic the speaker was, I found it so interesting. She provided great resources and opened my eyes to this type of approach.
Workshop Participant

Listening to you talk about SFBT really helped further my understanding on the topic... I would love to see SFBT get more attention in OT school because it is an approach that aligns well with the OT profession and OT values. Having the chance to participate in an example SFBT session was amazing. It clearly showed me how to let the client guide the session and how the therapist uses questions to obtain information and solutions from the client rather than the therapist providing the client with solutions and asking if they would be willing to try one.
Student Occupational Therapist

Erica was so Inspiring and I enjoyed how she shared her expertise and experiences in a practical way. I learned so much and I will definitely be using the skills I’ve learned from her in my future practice
Student Occupational Therapist

Erica was amazing and she shared very helpful information/resources about SFC. She also used SFC approaches throughout the session to demonstrate them in action which was great! I also appreciated all the case studies.

Solution Focused practice is used in a variety of settings and professions (e.g. coaching, counseling, case management, allied health, physicians, schools, corporate and executive coaching, human resources, marketing, and more).
I have chosen to use the term coaching because most OTs that I have met are unaware of Solution Focused Brief Therapy.

The skills learned are broadly applicable and can enhance the way any professional approaches client care, problem-solving, and goal-setting. However, please note that the case examples and context are tailored specifically for OTs, focusing on improving client functioning and occupation. The material may be most relevant to those who work directly on occupation-based outcomes, but other mental health professionals are welcome to join and will benefit from the techniques and strategies shared.
This coaching program is designed for professionals who are open to learning and integrating Solution-Focused techniques into their current practice. Hi I'm Erica
I’m an Occupational Therapist, Psychotherapist based in Canada, and I’m passionate about using Solution Focused approaches to support and empower my clients. Solution Focused felt like a natural fit for my practice because it aligns so closely with the core values of Occupational Therapy, which is why I decided to integrate it after in-depth training.
Through solution focused conversations, I’ve seen firsthand how this approach helps clients shift from dwelling on past struggles to focusing on the future they want to create. They start to recognize their own strengths, expand their vision for what’s possible, and feel deeply understood, empowered to make meaningful changes in their lives.
Not only has SFBT reignited my own passion for OT, but it’s also led to quicker progress with my clients. It’s inspiring to see them develop their own strategies and take charge of their recovery. I believe it’s an approach that any OT can use to foster hope, collaboration, and lasting change in their practice.
Over the course of my career, I’ve been fortunate to:
Shaping my career to align with my values, integrating Solution Focused Brief Therapy as both a therapeutic modality and a lens through which I view clients.
Reducing burnout by embracing the collaborative and empowering nature of SFBT, which positions clients as the experts in their own lives.
Supervise other OTs as they incorporate solution focused approaches into their practice, a role that has been both fulfilling and rewarding.
Being featured in a book that highlights my work integrating SFBT within the field of mental health OT.
Guest lecturing annually at the University of Manitoba and the University of Toronto, where I share insights and experiences with future OTs.
I’m excited to share what I’ve learned to help you bring Solution Focused Coaching into your practice, too.
