    What is Solution Focused Coaching?

Solution Focused Coaching is also known as Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT).

SFBT is an evidence-based approach that is effective at helping clients from any background and with various presenting problems.

    • Client-centred: This language-based approach encourages clinicians to view each client as resourceful and competent, co-constructing with them to move forward into the life they would like to live.
    • Change-Oriented: SFBT professionals ask detail-oriented questions that help clients think in new and more adaptive ways. After engaging in these conversations, many clients report feeling warmly understood and empowered to take action and make changes in line with their desired outcomes.
    • Respectful and Collaborative: This approach doesn't re-traumatize clients or require them to wade through heartache and pain. Instead, SFBT helps clients expand their vision of who they are and what they are capable of accomplishing.
    • Looking Forward: SFBT encourages clients to focus their attention on the future they want to design and create, rather than continuing to focus on past problem-related concerns.

    (The Solution Focused Universe, 2023)

    Hi I'm Erica

I’m an Occupational Therapist, Psychotherapist based in Canada, and I’m passionate about using Solution Focused approaches to support and empower my clients. Solution Focused felt like a natural fit for my practice because it aligns so closely with the core values of Occupational Therapy, which is why I decided to integrate it after in-depth training.

Through solution focused conversations, I’ve seen firsthand how this approach helps clients shift from dwelling on past struggles to focusing on the future they want to create. They start to recognize their own strengths, expand their vision for what’s possible, and feel deeply understood—empowered to make meaningful changes in their lives.

Not only has SFBT reignited my own passion for OT, but it’s also led to quicker progress with my clients. It’s inspiring to see them develop their own strategies and take charge of their recovery. I believe it’s an approach that any OT can use to foster hope, collaboration, and lasting change in their practice.

Over the course of my career, I’ve been fortunate to:

    • Shaping my career to align with my values, integrating Solution Focused Brief Therapy as both a therapeutic modality and a lens through which I view clients.
    • Reducing burnout by embracing the collaborative and empowering nature of SFBT, which positions clients as the experts in their own lives.
    • Supervise other OTs as they incorporate solution focused approaches into their practice, a role that has been both fulfilling and rewarding.
    • Being featured in a book that highlights my work integrating SFBT within the field of mental health OT.
    • Guest lecturing annually at the University of Manitoba and the University of Toronto, where I share insights and experiences with future OTs.

I’m excited to share what I’ve learned to help you bring Solution Focused Coaching into your practice, too.
